My name is Bhagyesh Pathak and I specialize in consulting for small to medium-sized organizations, particularly non-profits and startups. The bulk of my practice involves working with co-founders of these types of organizations.
The type of work that I take up
The kind of work that doesn’t fit a typical job description—too nuanced for a simple listing but crucial enough to require expert attention. Still, for your reference, here are the types of projects I typically engage with:
- Data system design: I build these systems from scratch, starting with understanding your data collection needs to finalizing a functional software setup.
- Data visualization and analysis: I’m not a data scientist, and most organizations don’t need one. I provide tailored data analysis and visualization services that serve your specific purposes.
- Project and process design: Whether it’s serving as a sounding board for ongoing projects or designing new processes from the ground up, this is a significant part of what I do.
The approach
My work is guided by an approach that prioritizes the economy of time, money, and manpower over the long term. Here’s what drives my methodology:
- A little variation in process results in little variation in output.
- It’s never about tools, it’s about thinking.
- Objectives dictate everything.
- If two people can accomplish a task, there’s no need for a third.
- Design, ship, iterate. Repeat.
- Use the right tools—no need for a sword when a pin will do.
- Primarily asynchronous, occasionally synchronous.
The ultimate goal is to leave you with a solution that operates independently of my involvement.
Working arrangement
I work 6 days a week, dedicating about 2-3 days per client. The other days are reserved for calls and meetings as needed. The real work only happens when I’m not in a meeting.
I manage all work-related activities through Basecamp—a straightforward project management tool that facilitates our communication and organizes files and schedules. It’s less chaotic than Slack and tidier than email inboxes. Most of our communication will take place there, and since I cover the cost, you won’t need to worry about additional fees.
At the end of our collaboration, I provide a working copy of the entire Basecamp project for your archival and future reference.
